California Dreaming

Inspired by a trip to Palm Springs in the US, this mid-century-style stunner takes the place of a Fendalton home destroyed in the Christchurch earthquakes. A pool connected to alfresco living enhances the California aesthetic.

The low-slung building, with painted brick and vertical tongue-and-groove cladding, creates a strong 1950/60s statement. As do exposed rafters and exterior joinery facings. Orientated east to west, the five-bedroom home enjoys plenty of sun and room for guests. The approach to the house is through automated gates into a secure courtyard with a painted brick wall and covered walkway. A central runway extends the full length of the home. Interior timber cavity sliders separate livings spaces as required. The décor and joinery are consistent with mid-century architecture. The modern, bright, open-plan living environment boasts carefully selected furniture and fittings. Skylights increase the light, open feel. A large vitex deck links the living, dining and library to private pergola areas, pool and surrounding landscaping. Another deck connects the bedrooms with extensive lawns.  Geothermal heating throughout the home provides warmth for the cooler months and a pleasant swimming temperature in the pool.
